Description | The history of the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) began with the establishment of the Malaysian Military Academy (ATMA) on 1 June 1995 as an organization responsible for conducting undergraduate study programs and military training for Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) Cadet Officers. The role of ATMA was later expanded by making it UPNM which was gazetted on 10 November 2006. Although UPNM began the intake of its first group of students in the 2007/2008 session, it actually had experience in conducting undergraduate study programs for 11 years, namely from 1995 to 2006 through a collaborative program between the Ministry of Defense and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia where approximately 1017 graduates were produced in three fields which include Engineering, Science and Management. In addition to obtaining professional qualifications, all graduates were commissioned as ATM Officers and they are currently serving in various units in the Army, Royal Malaysian Navy and Royal Malaysian Air Force. UPNM was established by the Malaysian Government on 21 June 2006 to produce military and civilian graduates for the needs of national defense. The UPNM incorporation order was issued on 6 November 2006 to begin academic studies for the 2007/2008 session. For the intake of new students in the 2007/2008 session, 550 students reported for the Defense Foundation Program, consisting of 121 civilian students and 350 military students. Meanwhile, for the undergraduate program, 130 civilian students and 297 Defense Foundation students will follow the undergraduate program in the fields of Engineering, Science and Technology, and Defense Management and Studies. To begin the 2007/2008 session, UPNM has established 3 faculties in addition to the Defense Foundation Center, namely the Faculty of Defense Engineering, the Faculty of Defense Science and Technology, and the Faculty of Defense Management and Studies. The academic programs offered at the faculty are comparable to those of foreign and domestic public universities. This program will be able to attract students because it provides a curriculum that includes the field of defense science and technology in a hands-on format. The knowledge gained can be applied to national defense assets such as naval ships, aircraft, and military equipment in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM). In addition, it can be applied in the industrial sector based on the latest science and technology. |
