Description The Doctor of Philosophy (Ethnic Studies) program is designed to produce graduates who: Are able to connect and analyze problems in ethnic studies with inter- and multi-disciplinary conceptual and theoretical frameworks; Conduct critical analysis using social science methodologies, evaluation, and synthesis of new and complex ideas in ethnic studies; Contribute to original research through theses and publications to expand the boundaries of knowledge in ethnic studies; Contribute knowledge and expertise through academic networks with peers, the scholarly community, and the general public; Contribute to the formulation and implementation of development policies at the local, national, regional, and global levels; and Possess noble ethics and personality, high leadership culture, and high professionalism characteristics.

Entry Requirements Candidates seeking admission to a Doctoral program must possess the following qualifications:

A Master's Degree in a relevant field with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.00 from any university or higher education institution recognized by UKM; OR
Other qualifications equivalent to a Master's Degree recognized by the Senate; OR
Students currently enrolled in the Master of Ethnic Studies program on a full-time basis at the University and recommended by the KITA Graduate Studies Committee to change their status to a Doctoral Degree program with the approval of the Institute Director
English Requirement International candidates must meet the English language requirements as follows:

a) Obtain a minimum requirement score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 550; OR
b) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with Band 6.

International candidates who will write their thesis in Malay may be exempted from the IELTS or TOEFL requirements, but the candidate must take the English Language Proficiency Test (UKBI). If they do not pass the level specified by the program, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (MKBI) within a period of no later than two (2) semesters for master's programs or three (3) semesters for doctoral programs from the date of enrollment at the University.

The Institute may grant exemptions to the English language requirements for international candidates who come from countries where English is the official language or who have academic qualifications obtained from any higher education institution that uses English as the medium of instruction.
