Description Institute of Environment and Development (LESTARI) was established on October 1, 1994, as a multidisciplinary institute within the structure of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This fulfills the university's aspirations, as envisioned by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to realize the goals of sustainable development through research and capacity building.   LESTARI was also established to serve as a reference center capable of addressing environmental and development issues, assisting the government in formulating policies based on comprehensive and balanced research. Its development function is directed towards enhancing human resource capacity through skills development and training, both for the government and private sectors

Entry Requirements Candidates who wish to apply for admission to a Doctoral program must possess the following qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree with a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a University or any higher education institution recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or which has accreditation as specified by the program; or
A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from a University or any higher education institution or an equivalent degree from any other higher institution recognized by the Senate; or
Other qualifications recognized by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or fulfill other requirements specified by the program (if applicable); and fulfill the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) requirements.
English Requirement International candidates are required to fulfill the following English language proficiency requirements:

a) Obtain a TOEFL (550), IELTS (6), or MUET (4) result that meets the minimum score or band requirements specified by the program; or

b) For certain programs, candidates are required to take an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if they fail to achieve the level specified by the program, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) 1 within a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study program. Candidates shall register as Non-Graduate Students.
