Description In June 2005 the Faculty of Medicine of the Universiti Malaya introduced the Master of Emergency degree course. This course is fully supported by the Ministry of Health through scholarships or paid leave granted to applicants for the whole duration of each course. This support has enabled many doctors in Ministry of Health hospitals to acquire formal specialist training in Emergency Medicine, with a resultant increase in the number of practicing Emergency Physicians in the country. The four year course, leading to the degree of Master of Emergency Medicine, provides: Specialist training in pre-hospital care, disaster management, emergency department care, intensive care and trauma care. Subspecialty exposure in Emergency Medicine. Experience in community-based programmes to promote health and prevent disease and injuries. Exposure to research methodology. The aim of the degree programme is to prepare our future Emergency Physicians for the trends and changing milieu of the 21st century, to provide training opportunities for future Emergency Physicians with diversity of talents and characteristics to acquire the necessary knowledge, technical skills, good judgement, maturity, attitude and values for the quality practice of Emergency Medicine.

Entry Requirements 1) Entry qualifications

The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and
At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
2) Other requirements

Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
English Requirement A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language and where the applicant wishes to follow a programme shall be required:

To obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic).
